Assam

Geographically located between 89°42' to 96°30' East Longitude and 22°19' to 28°16' north Latitude. Dense forests and beautiful rivers is bordered by Bhutan in the North, Arunachal Pradesh in the East, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram in the south, Meghalaya in the South - West Bengal and Bangladesh on the West. The mighty Brahmaputra river flows through Assam creating the world’s largest river island named Majuli. It is known for tea, flora and fauna, the one horned rhinoceros and other rare species of wildlife. There are four national parks Kaziranga, Nameri, Dibru – Saikhowa, Orang, two major wildlife sanctuaries Pabitora and Manas (there are a total of 15 sanctuaries) and a lone bird Sanctuary known as Deeporbeel. Among the flora and fauna are one - horned rhino swamp deer, hog deer, wild pig, leopards wild buffalos, sambar gibbon, pythons, Asiatic buffalo, wild bear, tigers, civet cats and elephants. Among the avifauna egrets, pond herons, river terns, fishing eagles, adjutant storks, black necked storks can also be spotted. The major attractions on the rivers are   gharial and dolphins.

North East India has a number of tribes numbering to nearly over 250. The major tribes are the Chutiyas, Nagas, Miris / Mishings, Bodos, etc. The Major festivals celebrated in Assam are Bihu, Baishagu, Baikho, Rongker, Rajini Gabra, Ambubachi Mela, etc and are fascinating, reflecting their traditional lifestyle.

Communication / Connectivity

Airways - Assam is well connected to the major cities of India. Several domestic airlines fly to Assam. There are regular flights to Kolkata and Delhi. The Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport of Guwahati is well connected by air to most of the metros in the country and has regular flights. Air India also operates an international weekly flight between Bangkok and Guwahati.

Railways – Guwahati railway station is one of the major railway networks both within the state and with the rest of the country. There are regular train services from Kolkata, New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Cochin and Trivandrum. There are broad gauge tracks up to Dibrugarh and meter gauge line with Haflong and Silchar and have regular services. Some of the major towns within the state are also connected by the railway network.

Roadways – The state is well connected with West Bengal by National Highway number 31 and has a good network of roadways with the other states of north eastern states of India. Several travel companies as well as the Assam State Transport Corporation operates a large network of buses around the state. Roads are good and are the best mode of travel in north east India, airways are the next best but chopper services and small aircraft are the options. Buses and private vehicles are always available and night services are also there.
